49th Street Urban Art Project

Your organization is invited to participate in the 49th Street Urban Art Project "Bringing Communities Together." This project partners Indy Parks Greenways with its neighbors along the Monon Rail-Trail and invites artists of all ages, students, neighborhood organizations and others to join together in producing a work of public art unique to our city. The site of this project is the Winthrop Supply Co., Inc. adjacent to the Monon Rail-Trail and includes 17 (15-foot by 15-foot) art mural panels.

This public art program illustrates the way the city, community, local business, and individuals can come together in an atmosphere of positive force to improve an area that has experienced graffiti in the past few years. The Urban Art Project between 52nd and 54th Streets is a stunning masterpiece of individual talent and community effort.

The mural site is the western exterior wall of the Winthrop Supply Co., Inc., located at 4851 Winthrop Avenue, adjacent to the Monon Rail-Trail. Winthrop Supply Co., Inc. Owner Fritz Steck and Manager Bill Cowell have provided the wall space and are committed to helping with the project.

In an open area on the other side of the trail, Girl Scouts will plant a garden area as an Urban Beautification Project. With these two initiatives, 49th and the Monon will become one of the most visually spectacular spots on the trail.

The project is in the developing phase, gathering both partnerships and interested artists. We plan to have the project finalized within two to three months. The suggested start date of the project will be the last two weeks of May 2001. We encourage you to reply with a letter of interest in the 49th Street Urban Art Project. We would love to have you participate!

Send your letter to Jonathan Gick at Indy Greenways, 900 East 64th Street, Indianapolis 46220, or to jgick@indygov.org
