At left, a volunteer worker clears trash along the Monon Rail-Trail. Nora Target employees pitch in!An energetic crew of good trail neighbors cleaned up a section of the Monon Rail-Trail and learned some things about our greenways environment at the same time. All of the willing workers are employees of the Target Store in Nora Plaza and were recruited by their fellow worker Mickey Brown for the cleanup. Jonathan Gick, Greenways Environmental Education Coordinator, led a brief session about environmental issues of the Greenways before the work began. Gick also arranged for trash bags and pickup of the filled bags by the Department of Public Works. The cleanup took place along the Monon Rail-Trail from 86th Street to the Little League Fields near 91st, particularly in the little stream bed on the west side of the path. The Target volunteers worked from 8 a.m., Saturday, July 29, until they were done at about 10 a.m. "The cleanup was very successful!" said Gick. "Everyone was in good spirits and commented on how they would like to do another project with the Greenways." Gick noted that thick, dense brush on the west side of the stream hampered cleanup. He would like to thin that brush to allow a future cleanup in that area, possibly involving other Nora Plaza merchants.
In the photo above, Nora Target employees are happy and justifiably proud of their work. Front row, left to right: Rikki Browning, Joe Handojo, Mickey Brown, Lori Dyson. Groups wishing to participate in cleanup and environmental campaigns on the Greenways are encouraged to contact Indy Greenways headquarters at (317) 327-7431 and ask to speak with Jonathan Gick. He can provide support for those efforts. |
